The wide choice of power supplies available today means that, generally speaking, there is one available off-the-shelf, to meet every project’s specifications. Sometimes, however, an innovative design, or an unusual application may call for something tailormade for a project. This may require just a little tweaking of the original, or it may mean a completely bespoke design, custom made for specific requirements. Custom power design, however, can be expensive – and risky. To design a power supply from the ground up requires many man hours, and that is assuming there is a dedicated, in-house design team to do this. More typically, the custom design is outsourced to an external design house where a team can evaluate the project and determine if a minor adjustment or a bespoke power supply is required.

Customisation

For large volumes, the expenditure of designing from the ground up may make commercial sense, but for anything less than 1,000 units, the cost can be prohibitive. It also takes a lot of time to design this way and some projects’ timescales will not support a bespoke design effort. More often than not, for these time-constrained and/or smaller volumes, it may be easier to add to add to a power supply that is based on an off-the-shelf standard product.

We are also able to offer advice on compliance with standards, from medical, industrial, railway and military using COTS products for a variety of applications.
