Longest Day Golf Challenge

Longest Day Golf Challenge

Relec Electronics are immensely proud to report on the recent fundraising activities of our account manager and display expert, Mathew Rehm. Last weekend Mathew took part in the Macmillan cancer support “Longest Golf Day Challenge”, collecting donations and raising awareness in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

The team “2 Ball Joes” (aptly named for their propensity to lose multilpe balls on the same hole), teed off at 6am, Sunday 2nd August, at Play Golf Bournemouth. The “longest golf day challenge”, asks participants to play 4 rounds of golf, 72 holes, during a 24 hour period. So far, the team of Mat, Nick and Harry have raised an impressive £1,000 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the largest British charities and provides specialist health care, information, and financial support to people affected by cancer. It also looks at the social, emotional, and practical impact cancer can have, and campaigns for better cancer care.

The Course

PlayGolf Bournemouth offers two superb golf courses. The Bridge Course is the longer of the two and serves up a range of challenges with water often coming into play. The Bridge Course measures 6313 yards with a par of 72. The terrain is relatively flat, but has a range of obstacles to be aware of, so not an easy challenge.

Planning for a 12-hour golf session, the team knew they would have to pack light, be quick about each shot, and ignore any balls potentially lost in the lake and shrubbery. They made sure to take an extra 50 golf balls, and a basic set of clubs.

They all agreed to carry their own clubs, rather than taking the “easy” option of trolley. Trying to minimise the weight, they each took only the most basic clubs; a wedge, driver, putter, 4-iron, 5-iron, 7-iron , 8-iron, & 9 iron. Carrying your own bag still proved difficult over the 25,000-yard event, but we’re happy to report the team did so successfully, and completed the 4 rounds and lived to tell the tale.

Mat, Harry & Nick teed off at 6am for their first round, and rolled up the 72nd after 9pm that evening, in near darkness – with no caddie, no use of golf-buggies, and each team member carrying their own clubs. The team also kept track of their movements, and clocked over 58,000 steps – which roughly equals to 25 miles! It’s fair to say that Mathew was quite sore when he returned to office this week.

In the spirit of competition, the team kept their scores over the 72 holes. Ultimately, Harry played impressively, and won 3 out of the 4 rounds, therefore winning their own personal Longest Day Golf Challenge.

The Relec team have donated over £650.00 to the team’s efforts, and are extremely proud to have supported them on their mamouth golf charity challenge. We congratulate Mathew, Nick and Harry for their initiative and efforts to help such a worthy cause.
