As our world becomes increasingly interactive, more electronic equipment has some form of human machine interface in the form of a TFT display and PCAP touch panel. At the same time, we are demanding that our electronics are designed to more robust standards, especially when used in harsh environments. The cover glass of a TFT display has always been a potential weak point, but the introduction of KK3 glass from Digiwise is about to change that.
What is KK3 glass?
Glass is found everywhere in our modern lives from windows, spectacles, bottle & containers and increasingly as a cover for TFT displays and touchscreens. Glass in general comes in many forms with a variety of different properties depending on chemical additives which are incorporated in its liquid state, before the glass is cooled. One of the newest and strongest types is Aluminosilicate Glass, Of which KK3 is one example. It contains between 20% and 40% aluminium oxide and is especially suited for use in TFT cover glass applications.

The structure of KK3 glass makes it suitable for additional chemical strengthening, that leads to a high level of mechanical impact resistance. KK3 offers a 6 fold increase in impact resistance when compared against standard glass for a given material thickness. This results in a more rugged product, with the advantage of being lighter and potentially cheaper for a given robustness, whilst still maintaining a high level of light transmission.
Available across our entire TFT range, RELEC offers a custom cover lens service. This can be included on any of our products, with or without a touch panel. Suitable when specific mounting methods are required, or custom graphics / logos.
I bet my glass is tougher than your glass!
A KK3 TFT display assembly has a mineral hardness of at least 8H measured on the Mohs scale (standard glass comes in around 5H and diamond is 10H) and can meet the requirements of IK08 for impact protection (in accordance with IEC62262:2002 & IEC60068-2-75:1997). IK08 equates to an impact of 5 Joules of energy which is the equivalent of a 1.7kg ball dropped from a height of 29.5cm.

OK, but what’s the catch – Can you still see through it?
In addition to its mechanical benefits, KK3 glass is also ultra-transparent, resulting in reduced interference with colour and an excellent transmittance of 92% meaning the optical characteristics of the display are almost unchanged.

RELEC Electronics are pleased to be able to offer KK3 glass options on all TFT panel sizes, with glass thicknesses from 0.55mm to 2mm. Standard modifications are also available, including:
- Addition of a PCAP sensor
