Our customer was looking for a medically approved desktop power supply to run a series of motors and valves for a clinical study. They need a regulated 6V output but the current had to be limited to a maximum of 5A due to the restrictions placed on the DC connectors.

Whilst the initial requirement was for 6V @ 5A (30 Watts), it soon became apparent that this was not going to be sufficient to drive all parts of the system concurrently. We couldn’t simply offer a larger 6V PSU because of the restrictions placed on the connectors. We suggested that the customer increase the output voltage to 9V and provide some local regulation within the system to convert back to 6V where necessary. We were therefore able to offer a 45W solution, but still keep the input current under the 5A limit.

We were able to supply samples quickly for the customer along with Test reports for the medical approvals, general safety and EMC to support the customer through type approvals and into production.
